Xiaomi Mi A2: Should you buy ?

In 2018, it is quite difficult to get surprised by the new phones launching in the cutthroat competing market. There are so many options to buy, which makes it difficult to choose your right digital companion.

Xiaomi Mi A2, launched in India yesterday (8 Aug,18) with a price tag of  Rs 16,999. The Device is now available to purchase with shipping beginning from 12 Aug,18. The Device slides into the midrange segment with the given price tag.

Now, the question is should you buy it in 16999? What are you getting on the phone with this price?  Is it value for money?  These are the questions which hit the buyer’s mind while choosing the phone in the market where there are so many other options available.

Let’s break down the phone by Design, Specs, Pros, & Cons!

Mi A2 Design

Let’s be honest, we all want the phone to look premium and stylish no matter what price range phone we are buying. The Mi A2 fulfills that need, it looks sharp and sleek.

It has an ultra-thin design, full metal uni-body and it has a texture which is good for the grip.

The camera placement is the same as the iPhone, which is not bad, but that camera bump though! Finger-sensor placement is behind the phone which is the most convenient. The volume and lock buttons look premium and give a premium feel while using.

The screen is tall and with a lesser bezel in front. Gives the premium screen feel. Overall the phone looks Elegant and Stylish in the price range.

Camera:  20MP + 12MP Dual camera | 20MP Front camera. Also, the front facing camera has AI Beautify 4.0!  It also has a SONY IMX 376 Sony light sensors, AI Background Blurring, and HDR. Quite good camera specs for Rs 16999. It also takes the good wide angle pictures as it has 18:9 aspect ratio with 5.99″ FHD+ large display.

Display: Mi A2 comes with 5.99-inch display a full-HD+ resolution, with a pixel density of 403ppi, and also with a Gorilla Glass 5 to make sure your screen is protected every time you slip the phone. They have also added the ambient display feature, which wakes the phone everytime you get the notification. Honestly, the display is decent enough. The viewing angles are good. It also has the Ambient Display feature which wakes the phone when you get a notification.

Processor & Memory: Mi A2 is built with Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor. It is a flagship-level Processor with AI Engine. The A2 has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The memory isn’t expandable. You have to live with that one! 14nm FinFET processor exhibits high performance and consumes less power. The mi A2 has Adreno™ 5high-performance GPU generates great visual. Mi A2 also comes with Part of Google’s Android One programme.

Device Dimensions:

  • Height: 158.7mm
  • Width: 75.4mm
  • Thickness: 7.3mm
  • Weight: 168g

Battery: Battery is the most important factor which is considered while purchasing the phone. Mi A2 comes with 3010mAh Non-removable 5V2A charging. It is slightly less than what other mobile brands are offering in this price range. The device also supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 4+  but the disappointing thing is, it only provides a standard 10W charger in the box. (Damn! that’s unfair)

Networks and Connectivity: The device comes with 4G dual sim slot while using two sim cards, only one of them will support 4G. That means you cannot run 4G internet in both the sims at the same time. ( Which is logical, otherwise the device battery will run out of juice much faster)

  • The Price. Its a device with a decent specification in the price segment.
  • The camera is pretty good with dual rear camera setup of 20MP+12MP with f/1.75 aperture. The picture quality in a low light picture does the decent job.
  • A Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 flagship-level Processor with AI Engine is a good deal in the mid-range price segment.
  • As it comes with the part of Google’s Android One programme the device will get the quick updates compared to another android phones which doesn’t have Google’s Android One. It also includes the security patches and the Android UI! That’s awesome.
  • The design is elegant, neat & clean with a sleek approach. It is a good looking device.
  • Dual sim card slot
  • The device supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 4+
  • Colors option available is simply great. (Black, Glacier Blue, Sand Gold)
  • The built quality of the device is good.

  • NO HEADPHONE JACK! Yes, the Mi A2 has eliminated the headphone jack. (I guess they are just following the trend) But it is really inconvenient!
  • They have downgraded the battery to 3010mAh battery. It would be great if they could go up to 3200mAh least.
  • No expandable storage.

So we have summed it up to decide whether to buy or not to buy Mi A2.

The Pros are greater than Cons. We conclude that it is a decent device with the price tag. The design is great, the specs are good, the camera is good. Unless you hate using Bluetooth headphones (as there is no headphone jack), we do not see any other major reason to NOT buy Mi A2.
